The Cross River Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested no fewer than 100 suspects across the state between January and June over alleged illicit drug offences.

The state NDLEA Commander, Rachael Umebuali, said at a briefing in Calabar yesterday that the command also seized 290kg of illicit drugs within the period under review.

Umebuali said the briefing was part of activities to commemorate the United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.

She listed the seized illicit drugs to include, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, diazepam, tramadol, and cannabis sativa.

The commander expressed displeasure at the escalating level of drug consumption and trafficking in the state, and the country at large.

She identified Ikom, Abi, Biase and Calabar South as the local government areas with high drug abuse prevalence rates.

Umebuali said the challenge of drug abuse had evolved into a significant social issue with consequences on security, economy and the overall welfare of the population.

“This has undeniable connections to the rise in insecurity, which is having negative impacts on peace and the economy nationwide.”

“Armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, rape, and other violent crimes are attributable to the consumption of illegal drugs,” she said.

The commandant urged the government, corporate bodies and people with a desire for change to join forces with the agency to eliminate illicit drugs in the society.

He said the command also used the week to visit places of worship to carry out anti-drug sensitisation campaigns.

“Our intention is that they will in turn sensitise their children and wards on the fight against illicit drugs.

“Drug abuse in the state is so high that we need to do a lot. We cannot do this alone without the collaboration of other agencies and the media,” she said.

Umebuali commended the state government for its support to the agency.

By Mario Deepromoter

Hoodlums have abducted 66-year-old Mrs. Elizabeth Uruakpa, an Assistant Chief Nursing Officer at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan Remo, Ogun State, on Thursday evening.

Uruakpa was reportedly returning from an evening church service when the attackers ambushed her at the entrance of her home, located near the new Ilisan market.

The incident, which occurred around 7 pm, caused panic in the neighborhood, prompting residents and business owners to quickly shut their doors in fear.

According to a local resident who spoke to The Punch on the condition of anonymity, the gunmen forcibly removed Uruakpa from her vehicle and whisked her away in a red Toyota car.

“The woman was coming back from the church in the evening around 7 pm when the gunmen abducted her. I know her very well, she’s a senior nursing staff with Babcock University Teaching Hospital and a member of the Winners’ Chapel.

They dragged her down from her vehicle, put her in their red Toyota car and sped away. It was really like thunder lightning, and such a thing had never happened before in our neighbourhood. It is so strange and scary,” the resident said.

Babcock University’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, confirmed the abduction, noting that the university is actively seeking more information.

“I heard about it last night. It is on one of the university’s platforms but I don’t have a comprehensive report about it. Someone is already working on getting more information about this and as soon as it is ready, I will get across to you,” Suleiman said.
