Security forces, including the Police and other agencies, has on Wednesday night eliminated approximately five gunmen who allegedly launched an attack on a police station in Ebonyi state.
Sources from the area indicated that the gunmen assaulted the Ishieke Police Station in Ishieke, a suburb of Abakaliki, the state capital.
Upon arrival, the gunmen engaged in a prolonged shootout with police officers on duty, lasting several hours.
According to reports, the incident began around 9 pm and was marked by intense gunfire, prompting residents to seek shelter.
Eyewitness Tony Nwori described how the gunmen arrived at the police station and started firing shots indiscriminately into the air.
He recounted that the exchange of fire between the gunmen and the police at the station continued for over 30 minutes until reinforcements from other security agencies arrived.
The escalating situation attracted additional security personnel, including a significant deployment of soldiers, who intervened to apprehend the attackers.
The gunmen attempted to retreat, firing shots as they fled towards Odomoke Ishieke market along Nwiboko Obodo road.
However, security forces pursued them vigorously, eventually neutralizing the assailants.
