The Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, has been plunged into darkness following the sudden disconnection of power supply by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
The action of the firm was in spite of the payment of N20 million out of the N60 million monthly bill by the state-owned university.
The management is now considering three options: shutting down the university, asking the students not to return after their semester vacation, or having them bear the brunt of living without electricity.
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Abdulkadir Dambazau, disclosed this to newsmen in Wudil on Monday.
He said that the institution relied heavily on power to supply water, which has now become a serious issue.
He said, ”The management has been making sacrifices to pay the bills, but KEDCO’s sudden increase in the monthly bills from N16-17 million to N50-60 million, plus an accumulated bill of N248 million, has left us struggling.
”The university has appealed to the government, philanthropists, and citizens to come to its aid to avoid a complete shutdown, as the institution cannot function without power.”
