PDP Governors Declare Support For Organised Labour’s Push For Minimum Wage Increase

The 13 governors of the PDP also supported the Nigerian government’s stance on granting autonomy to local governments.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has thrown its weight behind the organised labour regarding its demand for a new minimum wage.
The 13 governors of the PDP also supported the Nigerian government’s stance on granting autonomy to local governments.
This was part of the resolutions from its meeting in Enugu on Wednesday, which lasted over four hours, with Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, addressing the press on behalf of his colleagues.
He also called for a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Rivers State between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
While reading out the communique before journalists, the PDP governors’ forum acknowledged that the minimum wage negotiations are becoming unduly protracted in the face of the unprecedented hardship and impoverishment of the people, saying the organised labour’s demand for a substantial salary raise is eminently justified.
They said the agreement must take into consideration the ability to pay by the subnational, federal and local governments, and appealed for restraint in both utterances and actions that could lead to the complete breakdown of law and order as well as the collapse of the economy.
Declaring their support for the autonomy of the local government as enshrined in the constitution, the forum said it believes in the efficacy of the local government system which ensures that governance will be brought closer to the people.
While regretting the level of hardship faced by Nigerians under the All Progressives Congress-led federal government, the PDP governors’ forum promised to bring back the good old days of low inflation rate, affordable food, fuel and transportation among others.
The forum commended the governors of the PDP-governed states for their innovative approaches to governance in many areas, especially infrastructure, education, health as well as timely delivery of developmental projects across the country.
The governors further called on Nigerians to refrain from any anarchy as the PDP works towards its return to power in 2027.
The forum commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for holding the party together not only in Enugu but in the entire South East.
Aside from the PDP governors, others in attendance were the chairman of the party, chairman of the Board of Trustees, the chairman of the former PDP governors’ forum, and the chairman of the Senate caucus.
Others were the chairman of the former ministers’ forum, as well as PDP state chairmen in the 36 states of the federation.

Clarification: Obi is interested in only united coalition front -Obidient Movement

The Obidient Movement has declared that their principal, the LP presidential flag bearer in last election, Peter Obi is only interested in united coalition front.
This was contained in a statement issued and signed by Nana Kazaure
Director, Strategic Communication stating that:
“The Obidient Movement has been inundated with calls from our members within and outside the country, including other members of the public, regarding a media publication claiming that our principal, Peter Obi, has been offered the running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the new coalition being formed ahead of 2027.
” Even as we know that the publication is imaginary to the author, we are tempted not to ignore it because of the possible far-reaching misconception it will have in the public space.
“While frank and cordial engagements with our partners and stakeholders towards a coalition continue amicably, the Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever.
“Without any risk of contradiction, we would like to reiterate that Mr Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition, is to provide a united front against and to tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out of school children and the myriad of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.
“We want politics that is progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power.
“At this point in time, Mr Peter Obi remains in the Labour party, and if ever this changes, he will make that announcement himself.
The Obidient Movement would like to advise against sensationalism and speculation on these matters. At this difficult time, all Nigerians and the Media, inclusive, should emphasise and contribute to building a better country.

Why I defected to APC in Cross River, ex-PDP deputy gov candidate

By Francesca Hangeior
The Peoples Democratic Party deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 election in Cross River State, Dr Emana Ambrose Amawhe, has stated that her defection to the APC was driven by her commitment and desire to bring development to his constituency and deliver the dividends of democracy to her grassroots.
Addressing APC stakeholders and supporters at the party’s secretariat on Saturday in Calabar, Dr Emana stated that her defection to the APC family is a new beginning of new things in her political aspirations.
“Today’s occasion of the grand defection rally which is a new beginning of new things politically, not just for myself but for over a hundred of my followers who have decided to cross over to the APC from PDP across the 18 local government areas of Cross River State. This is a new season in the entire political landscape of the state,” she added.
She stressed further that the development strides of Governor Bassey Otu are what have endeared her to the party and commended the governor for his effective efforts in restoring peace and security to Akpabuyo Local Government Area, pledging to join hands with the governor and contribute to the development of Cross River State.
On her decision to defect from the PDP to the APC, she said, “I’m drawn to the governor’s exceptional leadership style and dedication to the state’s progress. When a leader performs outstandingly and excellently, it is natural to want to join forces and contribute to the growth and development of our state. I have chosen to partner with our dear governor to effectively serve our people and build a better future for our community. This is beyond politics but a means to effectively serve the people.”
Emana said, “Political parties are open platforms where people choose to align with certain ideologies. Nobody forces anybody to join any political party. There is nobody holding a gun on somebody’s head to join the APC. People voluntarily and willingly join the APC. As for me and my supporters, we have collapsed our structure to partner with Governor Bassey Otu to deliver on his People’s First Mandate and also partner with the renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu to drive economic development for our people.”
Emana, a veteran broadcaster and businesswoman woman, defected alongside thousands of her supporters, including some state working executives of the PDP. She lauded the leadership of the APC for their warm reception and pledged to fully cooperate with the party leadership, upholding its principles to enhance victory for the 2027 general elections and beyond.
In his remarks, the state chairman of APC, Alphonsus Eba, tasked the defectors to be instrumental to the party’s success in future elections at all levels, saying, “We have chosen this day by the approval of the leader, Governor Bassey Edet Otu, represented by the Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey to receive you all into the Party.”
Eba said, “I want to appreciate the due process you have followed. You have all gone through the ward level, and you have made your intent known. You have registered in your polling units and wards. Today, you all are bonafide members of our party.”

Just in: PDP leaders plan to grab power as govs, ex-govs meet

IN a move aimed at addressing the gale of defections and internal crisis rocking it, governors elected on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, met with former governors and other party stakeholders to strategise on its survival and forge a common front ahead of the 2027 general election.
The governors also invited former PDP governors, members of the Board of Trustees and former presiding officers of the National Assembly.
Recall that the rank of the PDP has been depleting, following the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and the PDP structure in the state to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Also, National Assembly members have been leaving the party.
Three Kebbi lawmakers, Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South), joined the APC after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu last Friday.
Following the wave of defections, the PDP leaders convened yesterday’s meeting to prevent the country from turning into a one-party state.
It was also learned that the PDP leaders addressed key issues, including the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting and the National Elective Convention, at the expanded meeting.
The meeting, it was further gathered, was convened to chart a way forward for the party.
The meeting, convened by the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, would help define the party’s strategic direction, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting was held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
Governors present at the meeting were Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Peter Mbah (Enugu) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).
PDP governors, who were notably absent, were Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Duoye Diri (Bayelsa); and the suspended governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.
Their absence, particularly that of Governor Fubara, highlights the widening cracks within the party, especially in states grappling with internal leadership disputes or increasing pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Others present included the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum; former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson; former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke; former Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; and former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa.
Also present at the meeting were the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose political influence remains significant within the party, despite ongoing internal tensions; former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel; and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
Vanguard was reliably informed that the meeting was centred on “tackling the party’s internal crisis, which has triggered a series of high-profile defections to the APC.”
Multiple sources told Vanguard that the PDP leaders “deliberated on strategies for unifying the party and stemming the tide of defections to strengthen its standing ahead of the 2027 elections.”
Also, the dispute among members of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, was brought to the front burner.
The ongoing leadership issues, particularly concerning the roles of the National Secretary and the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Damagum, were discussed, with possible resolutions or new appointments considered. Vanguard further gathered that the meeting set the foundation for the PDP’s 2027 electoral strategy.
Though the agenda of the meeting was not disclosed to newsmen, it was gathered that deliberations were also around whether or not to pursue coalition arrangements with other opposition parties or to concentrate on internal consolidation, as resolved in earlier consultations.
With off-season governorship elections looming in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states, the party leaders would “explore ways to mobilise resources and galvanise support for the PDP candidate,” aiming to secure victories that could boost the party’s momentum ahead of the national polls. The outcome of the meeting, which remains ongoing at the time of filing this report, is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the PDP’s future as it confronts internal challenges and prepares for key elections.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed reservations that he was facing problems to reconcile and rebuild the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku’s Media Aide, Mazi Paul Ibe, accused some members of the PDP of working against his efforts, making it harder for the party to stand strong against the APC.
In a chat with Vanguard, Ibe said Atiku was focused on forming a strong coalition that could challenge the APC, which he blamed for causing pain, violence, hunger and hardship in the country.
However, he said some people in the PDP were working with the APC to weaken the party from within and stop it from waxing stronger.
Ibe alleged that some well-known people who rose politically through the PDP were now working against the same party, allegedly in alignment with the APC.
He said: “Atiku has put in a lot of effort to build the party, but he cannot do it alone. The party needs to work together and be disciplined. When people sabotage his work and try to hand the party over to the APC, the failure is not his but theirs.”
On those who say Atiku should not run in 2027, Ibe said: “Everyone has the right to his opinion. If they believe he should not run, they can support someone else. Let them bring out their candidate and work for that person. That is what democracy is about; it may not always be perfect, but it gives people the right to choose.”
He also criticised the APC-led government for failing to fix major problems such as insecurity, hunger and the poor state of the economy.
“In April, the President was having a good time in France, a country built by the hard work of its people, while Nigerians were being killed at home. A good leader would have ended the trip and returned home to handle the crisis. But some people do not seem to care,” Ibe said.
He stressed that whether or not Atiku would run in 2027 should not be the main focus right now. The bigger problem, he said, is the poor leadership of the APC government.
While urging Nigerians to stop focusing on Atiku’s future, he tasked Nigerians to hold the present government responsible for the country’s problems.
