PSC promotes 7,194 inspectors to ASPs
The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 7,194 Police Inspectors to their next ranks of Assistant Superintendents of Police II.
The Head of Press and Public Relations of the PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that the promoted officers were products of the recently concluded Inspectors Board interview that took place in all the Police Zonal Command headquarters in the country.
The PSC spokesman said the commission’s approval had been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Olukayode Egbetokun, for implementation.
Ani said the chairman of the commission, Mr Hashimu Argungu, congratulated the newly promoted officers and reminded them that their new ranks called for more commitment to national duty.
The PSC boss said the promotion had come at the right time when plans were concluded to properly motivate them to put in their best in the service of the nation.
Argungu said the country was currently undergoing some positive restructuring, resulting to temporary discomfort, but called on the officers to join hands to protect the nation’s democracy.
The PSC boss pledged that the commission would continue to ensure that promotions in the Nigeria Police Force were timely and predictable.
He urged the newly promoted officers to reciprocate the gesture by conducting themselves within established laws and put in their best to address the current security challenges facing the country.

Malaysia Govt moves to phase out CNG-powered vehicles due to safety concerns
By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
The Malaysian government has announced plans to phase out the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles and end the sale of natural gas vehicles (NGV) in the country.
Loke Siew Fook, minister of transport, spoke at a press conference recently, according to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), a local media organisation. In Malaysia, CNG is referred to as NGV. Fook said CNG-powered vehicles can no longer be registered or be used in Malaysia from July 1, 2025.
He also said Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), a government-owned oil and gas company, will halt the sale of CNG at its stations in stages, starting on July 1, 2025.
The minister said with only about 44,383 NGVs currently in the country — accounting for 0.2 percent of vehicles in Malaysia, excluding motorcycles — the safety of road users and the public will be restored.
“The NGV tanks of these vehicles are now reaching the end of their service life and need to be replaced and NGV tanks typically have a safe usage period of 15 years,” Fook said. He further said there are also some car owners who have modified their vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, which are very dangerous.
The minister said the vehicles had caused explosions during accidents. ‘WE ARE PROVIDING SUPPORT PACKAGES FOR THE TRANSITION’ Fook said an assistance package aimed at helping owners of CNG-powered vehicles during the coming transition period has been put in place.
“Taxi drivers using NGV vehicles are eligible for a one-off RM3,000 e-voucher through Petronas’s Setel mobile app,” he said.
“They must have been registered with the Land Public Transport Agency before October 1.
“For dual-fuel vehicle owners, they can get their NGV kits removed for free at workshops selected by the transport ministry. Their vehicles must be registered with the road transport department (JPJ) before October 1.
“Lastly, for owners of purely NGV-powered vehicles, they are eligible for a one-off payment based on the current value of their vehicles, which will be determined by an independent appraiser.
“For this package, the vehicles must also have been registered with JPJ before October 1.
“Upon taking up the offer, the vehicles will be sent to an authorised automotive treatment facility to be disposed of and deregistered by JPJ.” Fook said it is necessary to prevent the misuse of the vehicles or for any illegal modification to be carried out on them as it would endanger the public.
He said payments under the support package will be made within three to seven working days “of receiving a vehicle’s certificate of destruction and deregistration slip”.
Malaysia introduced the use of compressed natural gas in the late 1990s for taxicabs and airport limousines. In Nigeria, the federal government is pushing for the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel for transportation.
The initiative, introduced by President Bola Tinubu as a measure to curb the impact of the removal of petrol subsidy on individuals, “attracted over $200 million in investments so far as the government plans to build 1,000 conversion centres” across the country.

NBC Calls for Peace and Progress in interstate Boundary Resolution(Photos)
The Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC) Surv. Adamu Adaji has called for peace and progress in the resolution of interstate between Abia and Akwa Ibom States.
Adaji made this call at a Stakeholders meeting on the Abia/Akwa Ibom interstate boundary resolution held in Abuja.
The meeting underscores the Commission’s commitment to achieving a peaceful and definitive settlement.
“This meeting is a crucial step toward fostering understanding and cooperation between Abia and Akwa Ibom States,” the Director-General stated.
He acknowledged the complexities involved in resolving the decades long dispute, which has seen repeated interruptions due to local tensions and legal entanglements.
The Director-General highlighted the NBC’s determination to creating a harmonious solution, one that respects the historical and legal boundaries while prioritizing the safety and development of border communities.
The boundary dispute, rooted in the implementation of Decree 23 of 1985, has been marked by instances of hostility, waton destruction of lives and properties, and abductions, notably in regions where the field tracing exercise was stalled in 2014.
The Akwa Ibom State Boundary Committee expressed grave concerns over recent escalations, including fatal incidents affecting the Nkari people of Ini Local Government Area (LGA) and allegations of encroachment into farmlands in Obotme.
In her response, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, called for calm among affected communities, urging boundary community dwellers to avoid retaliatory actions whilst assuring them of ongoing efforts to resolve the matter peacefully.
The Akwa Ibom delegation presented a position paper outlining the state’s stance and a set of recommendations aimed at expediting the resolution process.
These recommendations include strict adherence to delimitation protocols and improved oversight of field team conduct to prevent further disruptions.
Echoing the call for decisive action, Engr Ikwechkwu Emetu, Deputy Governor of Abia State, expressed optimism for the meeting’s outcomes.
He addressed the lingering issues and called for the recovery of essential field documents lost over time, stressing the importance of these materials to accurately demarcate the boundary.
The Deputy Governor also highlighted the need for a distinct categorization of disputes, distinguishing genuine boundary claims from requests for boundary adjustments.
With both states aligning on the urgency of a resolution, the NBC is expected to facilitate constructive dialogue in line with recommendations from previous joint meetings.
The Director-General concluded his address by reaffirming NBC’s role as a neutral body committed to justice and fairness, pledging that the Commission will implement the findings of this meeting to end the dispute and foster lasting peace in the affected areas.
The outcome of the Abuja meeting will be pivotal, with all parties hopeful for an agreement that finally puts an end to decades of contention, allowing both Abia and Akwa Ibom States to move forward in unity and prosperity.
The meeting brought together key representatives from both states to address the persistent boundary dispute affecting Abia and Akwa Ibom communities.
