17 Feared Killed as Nationwide Protest Grounds Commercial Activities in Lagos, Abuja, Others

The 10 day nationwide protest which started Thursday recorded no fewer than 17 deaths, just as commercial activities in many parts of the country came to a standstill.

Most roads in different cities, including Lagos, were deserted as Nigerians took cover and remained at home.

Almost all the commercial banks in states were also said to have remained shut to avoid attacks from hoodlums.

It was gathered that no fewer than 17 people lost their lives following the protest in Northern parts of the country.
Punch Newspaper reported that at least 17 people were feared killed in Abuja, Kano, Niger, Borno, Kaduna and Jigawa as a result of the protest.

The protest was violent in many parts of the North with Boko Haram taking advantage of the situation to kill some people in Borno State where the Governor declared curfew.

In Kano state, some hoodlums took advantage of the protest to loot business premises.

The situation forced Governor Abba Yusuf to impose a 24-hour curfew .

The protest was successful until hoodlums started looting business premises, government properties and even attacked people.

The Governor said in a statement, “After exhaustive deliberations during Emergency State Security council meeting, it was collectively decided that 24-hour curfew should be put in place to prevent further looting and vandalization of shops including indiscriminate killing and maiming of innocent citizens.

“On this note therefore, and based on the powers conferred on me by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the Chief Security Officer of the State, I have therefore, declared 24-hours curfew in the State with immediate effect.”

The protest was said to have at a point also turned violent in Abuja .
The protesters were said to have blocked the high way in Abuja and also became violent leading to the shooting of one of them.

Following the protest, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was said to have met with President Bola Tinubu in the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Details of the meeting were not known but sources said Wike had told the protesters that the federal government was ready to have dialogue with them.

The FCT Minister was said to have made the statement on the occasion of the handing over the Staff of Office to four persons who were coronated Chiefs in the city.
