Gov Alia Condemns Benue Attack, Mourns Victims

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the fresh attack on Ayati settlement in Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

Over 30 people were killed on Thursday after bandits stormed the farming community. The incident which sent shocking waves across the state.

Reacting to the incident via his media aide, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor commiserated with the families of the victims over the attack.

“Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia expresses deep sadness over the news of another unprovoked attack on Ayati settlement in Ukum Local Government Area where several people were reportedly killed,” Kula said in a statement.

“Governor Alia strongly condemns the attack on unarmed innocent citizens of Benue State by armed bandits, expressing worry that such heinous act has continued in the state despite strong security presence and the regular dialogue sessions his administration has been holding with stakeholders, and traditional rulers seeking the return of peace in Sankera.”

The governor said his administration would “continue to use lawful procedures to protect Benue people, particularly Ukum which has been on the front line of attacks lately.”

To this end, he directed security agencies to improve their surveillance and also ensure that vulnerable communities are not left unguarded.

According to Governor Alia, the state government is awaiting the Judicial Commission of Inquiry to bring out its findings.

He also offered his thoughts of comfort to the victims’ families and the entire people of Ukum Local Government over the death of innocent people.

To Alia, his administration will continue to explore both discreet and open measures with a view to ensuring that Sankera retraces her path of peace and live happily again.
