Ohanaeze Backs Patriots’ Demand for People’s Constitution, Urges Economic Reforms

The Apex Igbo Socio-Cultural Organization, OHANAEZE NDIGBO, extends its heartfelt appreciation to THE PATRIOTS, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, for their unwavering commitment and patriotism towards securing a “People’s Democratic Pluralistic Constitution” for Nigeria.

We acknowledge the pressing need for a new constitution that addresses the defects, flaws, and shortcomings of the current Military-imposed 1999 Constitution, which lacks the clarity and strength to adequately address the demands of a pluralistic society like Nigeria.

OHANAEZE NDIGBO commends THE PATRIOTS for their bold demands for a brand new constitution and the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations, along with other past constitutional frameworks.

We believe that a true Federal Constitution, akin to those of successful pluralistic countries like India and Canada, is essential for addressing Nigeria’s diverse challenges and ensuring the unity and progress of our nation.

In light of the economic challenges leading to hunger protests and the recent threats of further unrest, OHANAEZE NDIGBO aligns with President Tinubu’s focus on economic reforms to address the issues of hunger, high costs of living, and food insecurity facing the country. We believe that tangible and practical solutions must be prioritized to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and restore stability to our nation.

While we support the majority of THE PATRIOTS’ demands, OHANAEZE NDIGBO respectfully disagrees with the proposal for a National Constituent Assembly at this time. Given the recent hunger protests and rumors of international interference, we believe that convening such an assembly would be ill-timed and insensitive to the current challenges facing our nation.

OHANAEZE NDIGBO acknowledges the historical injustices faced by the Igbo people in Nigeria, including marginalization in state allocation, federal appointments, and infrastructure development. We reflect on the recommendations of past constitutional conferences and assemblies, such as the 2005 National Political Confab and the 2014 National Conference, which highlighted the need for additional states in the Southeast region.

We urge President Tinubu to prioritize the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations, as this will not only address the pluralism of Nigerian society but also demonstrate his commitment to unity and progress.

We believe that investing resources in meaningful economic policies, rather than a new National Constituent Assembly, is crucial for improving the lives of all Nigerians and ensuring a prosperous future for our nation.

In conclusion, OHANAEZE NDIGBO remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and interests of the Igbo people and all Nigerians. We call for unity, dialogue, and constructive action to address the challenges facing our nation and build a brighter future for all.

Signed,

MAZI OKECHUKWU ISIGUZORO
SECRETARY GENERAL
OHANAEZE NDIGBO
