In a swift response to a distress call, the Anambra Police Command rescued a 27-year-old man, Alozie John, from attempting suicide on Wednesday, August 23, 2024.
Alozie, a resident of Umunnachi, Dunukofia LGA, had ingested a poisonous substance due to his inability to pay a debt of N1.2 million to his supplier of livestock products. He was intercepted by the police after sending a WhatsApp message seeking help.
The police immediately debriefed him, provided medical assistance, and took him into safe custody for monitoring. His mother has been contacted and is currently assisting the police with his evaluation and transfer to a better facility for proper care.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, commended the swift response of the police team and urged anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts to seek help.
This incident highlights the importance of mental health support and the need for individuals to seek help when struggling with debt or other personal issues.
