A devastating flood has claimed six lives with 10 others critically injured in Adamawa State.

The flood tore through Shuwa and Kirchinga communities in the Madagali Local Government Area causing destruction to lives and property.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the state visited the area on Sunday and declared the affected communities “disaster areas”.

He accordingly pledged to deploy resources to rebuild what was destroyed.

Bedside the deaths, 10,264 persons were reportedly rendered homeless by the flood.

As gathered, the flood was caused by torrential rain which started on Thursday and lasted till Sunday afternoon.

Bridges and other critical infrastructure were washed away. In particular, the bridge stretching over river Yazaram linking Adamawa and Borno States was washed away, leaving commuters stranded on both sides.

Crops on hundreds of hectares of farmland were also washed away, leaving farmers confused about what the future holds.

While commiserating with the flood victims Governor Fintiri expressed shock at the scale of destruction of property and farmlands caused by the disaster.

He said: “we’ll deploy resources to support the flood victims. We’ll do all within our lean resources to rebuild the area.

“I am appealing to the Federal Government and humanitarian agencies to support the Madagali flood disaster victims.

“The colossal damage is too much as 11 communities were affected by the flood,” Fintiri said.
