24hours To Retirement IGP Gets Tenure Extension of three years
By Mario Deepromoter
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, sources at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation have disclosed.
The officials, who requested anonymity, said that the IGP’s tenure was extended by three years.
They said the SGF, George Akume, gave the IGP the letter of his tenure extension Monday.
A senior security officer at the SGF Office also confirmed that the IGP received his letter of tenure extension from Akume on Monday morning.
The Senate had, on July 23, passed a bill that amended the Police Act 2020 introducing a new clause under Section 8, which contradicts the provision that mandates public servants to retire after 35 years of service or at 60 years of age.
Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP in June 2023, will clock 60 tomorrow (September 4, 2024).
The Senate had modified Section 18 of the Police Act 2020 by replacing subsection (8) with the following revised clause:
“(8) Notwithstanding any other provision, every police officer shall serve in the Nigeria Police Force for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.”

Executive Director, Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said when viewed from the point of the Nigeria Police Act, one can say the extension of IGP Egbetokun is in order, especially considering the fact that he was appointed barely over a year ago.
“However, while his appointment cannot be faulted on the above basis, we expect the Inspector-General to see the extension of his tenure to urgently commence the extensive reforms of the police he promised to carry out during his inaugural speech upon assumption of office as the Nigeria’s number one police officer last year.
“We charge Mr. Egbetokun to take urgent look into the welfare and condition of service of officers and men of the force, as a hungry police officer with AK 47 riffles on the street is a potential threat to the lives and wellbeing of the citizens.
“The issues of endemic corruption, indiscipline and lack of professionalism in the force, which has eroded public confidence of the citizens in the ability officers and men of the force to protect the lives and property of Nigerians also needs to be given urgent attention,” Zikirullahi said.
He said that IGP Egbetokun also needs to consider embracing modern policing principles, which relies more on the use of advanced security technologies and intelligence gathering rather than heavy man power.

Court fix Dec 10 to decide ex-Gov Bello’s bail
By Francesca Hangeior
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Maitama on Wednesday remanded the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, in custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Trial Justice Maryann Anenih ordered that he should remain with the anti-graft agency till December 10, when the court will rule on his application for bail.
Equally remanded in custody were Bello’s two co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu.
The defendants had pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge the EFCC preferred against them.
EFCC had specifically urged the court to deny the former governor bail.
The agency, through its team of lawyers led by Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, told the court that Bello, who is the 1st defendant in the matter, repeatedly refused to make himself available for trial.
It told the court that several efforts to secure his presence before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, where he is facing another charge, proved abortive.
Consequently, the Commission opposed a bail application that Bello filed through his legal team that was led by a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN.
Daudu, SAN, had after the former governor and his two co-defendants—Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu—pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge the anti-graft agency preferred against them, drew the attention of the court to a bail application his client filed on November 22.
In the application he predicated on six grounds, the former governor argued that he enjoys the presumption of innocence under the law.
