250 inmates stocked in one prison in Delta, activists lament

Stakeholders in the Administration of Criminal Justice in Delta state have raised alarm over the condition of 250 inmates in the Warri correctional facility of the state.

The Stakeholders including representatives of Correctional service, Human Rights Commission, MBA among others raised the alarm on Friday at the end of two-day workshop organised by CLEEN Foundation in Asaba, the state capital.

Representatives of Correctional officers led by its legs officer, Paulina Egbon, said that the 250 inmates are currently stocking in a small space originally made for 16 persons in Warri correctional facility.

“250 condemned inmates are stocking in a small space. It is part of our challenges. Where to keep them is our problem now in Warri.

“The place was built originally for 16 persons but now it is compacted for 250 inmates. We have asked the state government to find alternatives to this since they are not executing condemned inmates.

“The statistics are there in our board, though no one has died among them. It is supposed to be two persons in a cell where we keep inmates that are already condemned but now we are stocking 15 persons in a cell because of space,” they stated.

Earlier, the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mr Gad Peter, said the event was a crucial Policy Dialogue on Gender, Accountability, and Transparency in the Implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Regime.

The director, represented by Mr Nnamdi Odo, said the administration of criminal justice was a cornerstone of any society, providing the framework for the rule of law, protection of rights, and upholding of public trust.
