The average domestic airfare in Nigeria for a single journey skyrocketed by 25.51% month-on-month, reaching ₦123,700 in August 2024, compared to ₦98,561 in July.
This significant increase was reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its Transport Fare Watch released on Tuesday.
On a year-on-year basis, the cost of airfare has surged by 56.56%, rising from ₦79,011.38 in August 2023 to the current average.
The data indicated that Niger State has the highest air transport charges, with fares averaging ₦129,575.21 for specified routes. This is closely followed by the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where average fares stand at ₦129,442.67.
Conversely, Zamfara State recorded the lowest airfare at ₦102,665.89, with Cross River following at ₦120,088.93 as of August 2024.
This rise in airfare is part of a broader trend affecting various modes of transportation in Nigeria, including road, water, and train services, which have also seen fare increases attributed to rising energy costs.
