Minister of Women’s Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, recently voiced serious concern about the detention of 32 children reportedly arrested on August 3, 2024, during #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano and Kaduna.
On Saturday, she addressed public unease over the treatment, safety, and rights of these children, stating that “the Ministry is actively working to address these issues.”
She underscored that protecting children’s rights is fundamental, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution, the Child Rights Act, and international treaties Nigeria has adopted. She stressed that every child deserves protection, dignity, and due legal process.
To show her dedication, the minister visited the detention facility late at night, engaging personally with the children, listening to their concerns, and offering them reassurance of her commitment to their well-being.
She also met with officials to confirm that the children were receiving proper care and that their rights were being upheld.
“Conversations are ongoing with the Ministry of Justice, the judiciary, and correctional facilities to expedite these cases, ensuring they are addressed in juvenile courts as required by law,” her statement read.
The minister assured that the Ministry is monitoring the children’s welfare closely, collaborating with child rights advocates to prevent harm, discrimination, or abuse. Plans include working with child protection services to offer psychological support, social services, and rehabilitation for reintegration post-release. The Ministry also aims to provide educational support to aid their development.
She noted that the President has instructed the Attorney General to expedite these cases, expressing confidence in the fair administration of justice aligned with Nigeria’s rule of law and child protection principles.
The Ministry, adopting a Whole-of-Society Approach, is working to address juvenile delinquency by strengthening juvenile justice reform through collaborative initiatives.
“Efforts will focus on updating laws and fostering partnerships to empower communities in preventing juvenile delinquency nationwide,” she added.
The minister reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the children’s rights and assured citizens that the Ministry will continue to prioritize their protection, welfare, and access to justice.
