HoR to lead historic march, other Key initiatives against gender-based violence

In commemoration of this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the House of Representatives will lead a landmark march on Monday, November 25, 2024, along with other strategic activities as part of its unwavering commitment to eradicating gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement issued by the HoR spokesperson, Rotimi Akin, Jr on Saturday.
According to him the march, which starts at 8:00 AM, will bring together over 1,000 participants – including Representatives and members of the public – on a symbolic walk from the National Assembly to the Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.
This demonstration of solidarity will culminate in the submission of a petition to the Inspector General of Police, demanding decisive action to safeguard vulnerable populations and ensure accountability for perpetrators of GBV.
“This march and the associated activities are not just symbolic gestures, they reflect our resolve and call to action against gender-based violence head-on,” said Hon. Abbas Tajudeen,, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“We stand united in the fight to protect the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, especially the most vulnerable. Together, through collective action and legislative reforms, we can build a society where safety, justice, and equality prevail.”
Beyond the march, the 10th House of Representatives in alignment with its Legislative Agenda (2023 – 2027) has outlined *key activities to sustain awareness and action throughout the 16 Days of Activism:*
1. *Sash Demonstration Ceremony* – Tuesday, November 26, 2024
Members of the House will don orange sashes, symbolising solidarity with the fight against GBV, during plenary sessions throughout the campaign period.
2. *Convergence of State Assembly Speakers* – Monday, December 9, 2024
A strategic meeting at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, will bring together Speakers of State Houses of Assembly to discuss legislative strategies for combating GBV nationwide.
3. *National Citizens’ Summit and GBV Conference 2024 -* Tuesday, December 10, 2024
This summit will conclude the 16 Days of Activism with discussions on constitutional reforms and securing endorsements for gender equality initiatives championed by the House.
The House of Representatives invites all Nigerians to *participate in this historic march on Monday, November 25, 2024.* Participants will receive orange T-shirts—the official colour of the United Nations campaign to end violence against women—symbolising hope for a future free of violence.

Ramadan: HoR Minority Caucus counsels Muslim faithful to uphold tenets of Islam, pray for peace, unity

The House of Representatives Minority Caucus advises Muslim faithful across Nigeria to abide by the tenets of Islam, pray for peace, unity and national security this Ramadan.
This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the caucus leaders, Rep Kingsley Chinda, Ali Isa JJC Minority Whip, Isa Madaki Deputy Leader and George Ozodinobi Deputy Minority Whip.
The caucus said “we congratulate the entire Muslim Ummah on the commencement of this year’s Holy Month of Ramadan; which is one of the major tenets of Islam.
“Conscious that Ramadan is a sacred time for spiritual growth; renewal of utmost believe in our Creator; time for seeking forgiveness, and direction.
” We urge all Muslim faithful to use this period to among other requests; pray for peaceful co-existence, love, unity, and development in Nigeria.
” Also, we urge the Muslim Ummah to pray for the security, and protection of lives and properties across the country, where, sadly, blood birth is gradually resuming in our communities.
“As we warmly felicitate with all Muslim faithful for being alive in good health to observe the Ramadan fasting, we counsel that, in this sacred month, all followers of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), Peace Be Upon Him, should embrace deep reflections, renewed faith, and demonstrate gestures of kindness to all and sundry.
“As admonished in Islam teachings, we urge our brothers and sisters to consciously extend acts of compassion, generosity, and good neighborliness towards all, especially the needy, and less privileged in the society.
“Given our firm commitment to the preservation of the lives of all Nigerians, and the need to deepen good governance, the Caucus calls on Federal Government to tackle the resumed cases of killings in the society.
“It is imperative to also call on all security agencies to ensure that such cases of killings, maiming, and bloodletting are comprehensively curtailed during the Holy Month of Ramadan, and post-fasting period.
“Finally , as Muslim faithful rededicate themselves, and reflect on the purpose and lessons of Ramadan, we are confident that Almighty Allah will accept the fasting, prayers, and supplications as an act of Ibadah, Amin.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has applauded former Governor of Ekiti Kayode Fayemi for upholding her integrity as he denied there was no time the Kogi Senator accused him of sexual harassment.
Taking to her FB account, Senator Natasha thanked him for standing out for truth.
But netizens did not spare Senator Cyril Fasuyi who concocted the lie as they lay heavy causes on him.

Critical stakeholders support Amendment Bill on RMRDC Act

Critical stakeholders on Wednesday threw their weight behind the Bill seeking to amend the Raw Materials Research and Development Council ( RMRDC) Act 2022 during a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Science and Technology.
The Bill conceptualized by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council ( RMRDC) and sponsored by Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, basically aims at processing raw materials in Nigeria before exporting them .
In their separate presentations , stakeholders like the Ministry of Solid Minerals , Standard Organization of Nigeria ( SON) , Manufacturers Association of Nigeria ( MAN) etc , threw their weights behind expeditious consideration and passage of the bill .
Representatives of the stakeholders described intendment of the amendment bill as required catalyst to turnaround the fortune of the country from exporting jobs and wealth abroad to generating them here.
Specifically , the Director – General of Raw Materials Research and Development Council , Professor Nnanyelugo Ike Muonso said final consideration and passage of the bill , will stop exportation of wealth and jobs to foreign countries by Nigeria through processing of raw materials before exporting them .
” Today is my happiest day with the 100% support the amendment bill got from the various stakeholders”, he said .
In his closing remarks the Chairman of the Committee , Senator Iya Abbas , said since there was no opposing views to the proposed amendment bill , the committee will accordingly submit its report to the Senate soonest for final consideration and passage.
