On Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio clarified that the Senate has not withdrawn the Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu, stating that discussions on the bills will continue as planned.
Speaking during plenary at the Senate, Akpabio emphasized that the Senate will not be bullied or intimidated in the execution of its duties.
In response to a point of order raised by Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Akpabio asserted that the bills are designed to serve the interests of Nigerians and will proceed as long as they align with public welfare. He said, “The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that we are convinced serves the interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the best interest of the public.”
The Senate President further clarified that no suspension or withdrawal of deliberations on the tax reform bills has taken place, and any attempt to intimidate the Senate would be an undemocratic act. He also pointed out that the tax reform bills are executive communications and only the executive branch of government has the authority to withdraw them.
Akpabio concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to its legislative responsibilities, stating, “We don’t take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how highly placed.” This statement underlined the Senate’s independence in its role within the legislative process.
