Plot to impeach Abia Speaker thickens

The position of the lawmaker representing Aba South State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emereuwa as the 8th Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly is suffering a big threat as he may likely face impeachment from his colleagues in the next sitting of the state lawmakers.

It was not yet clear what may have caused such moves by the members of the Abia State House of Assembly, reports that emerged in the state on Friday have it that there is no love lost between the Speaker, the governor, Dr. Alex Otti and some members of the state legislature.

Unconfirmed reports at the time of filing the returns have it that there is no love lost between the State Assembly Speaker, his colleagues and the State Executive arm of government.

According to our correspondent, rumours in the state have it that about 21 signatures of the assembly members have been gotten for the Speaker’s impeachment as at Wednesday night.

It was gathered that members of the state assembly would be meeting with the governor of the state on Sunday in an attempt to address the ripples in the state assembly which could make or mar his tenure as the Assembly Speaker.

One of the crises that might face the lawmakers is about who succeeds the troubled Speaker between the two Labour Party’s representing Aba Central State Constituency and Umuahia East State Constituency respectively, should the governor give the nod for Rt. Hon. Emereuwa’s removal from office.

There hasn’t been any official statement from the state assembly over the ongoing ripples in the state assembly, but the member representing Isuikwuato State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Lucky Nweke Johnson, has dismissed rumours circulating about an alleged plot to impeach the Speaker.

Reacting to speculations that Emeruwa may be impeached, Hon. Johnson labeled the claims as unfounded lies aimed at misleading the public.

Hon. Johnson, a notable member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state legislature, described the claims as baseless and reassured the public that no such plans exist within the House of Assembly.

“Let it be categorically stated that there is no plan to impeach the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa,” Johnson declared.

The lawmaker further urged Abians to disregard what he described as misinformation, but to focus on issues that promote unity and development in the state.
