The boat reportedly capsized around 7:00pm after colliding with a submerged tree. Witnesses said the driver, unaware of the obstacle beneath the water, inadvertently navigated into it, causing the boat to tip over.

Among the passengers were residents from Odenyi Magaji and surrounding communities in Nasarawa State, many of whom depend on the market for their livelihoods.

Local divers, community members, and emergency responders have been working tirelessly since the incident to rescue survivors and recover the missing. One of the victims managed to swim to safety, while three bodies have been recovered so far.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), local authorities, and divers, has intensified efforts to locate the remaining passengers.

The tragic incident has left the affected communities in shock. Families of the missing have gathered along the riverbank, anxiously awaiting updates on the search. For many, the Ocholonya Market trip was part of their regular routine, making the accident even more devastating.
