A trainee herbalist, Ifagbenga Taiwo, who was arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly slaughtering his 41-day-old son in the Keesi area of Adatan, Abeokuta, the state capital, has disclosed that he carried out the act under a spell.

PUNCH Metro reported on Wednesday that the incident occurred last Monday after the baby’s mother, Raimat Wasilat, laid him on a bed while washing clothes outside their home.

Wasilat was said to have returned to the room and met his son with a slit throat, prompting her to raise the alarm, which attracted their neighbours and the police.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, disclosed that the wife had fingered her husband in his son’s death which prompted the police to take him into custody for further investigation.

Meanwhile, in an interrogation video obtained by our correspondent on Sunday, the suspect narrated how he used a knife to slit the throat of the infant.

He, however, blamed his action on the influence of a spell, stressing that he was not conscious of what he did until he had perpetrated the act.

According to Taiwo, on the day of the incident, he gave his wife a feeding allowance while going out to the place of his apprenticeship as she was washing some clothes outside.

He added that upon getting to his workplace, he realised that he had forgotten some charms, which he often used for protection at home and decided to return to pick them up.

He continued that while he was returning home, he realised that he was feeling uneasy and restless and that he felt like committing a crime.

Taiwo narrated in Yoruba (now translated), “I didn’t go home on Sunday due to engagements at work. I went home on Monday, and when I got home, I took my bath, gave my wife a feeding allowance, and left the house.

“It was when I got to work that I realised I had left the charms I used for self-protection at home. So, I went home to pick them up. After I picked them up, I returned to work.

“About an hour after I had returned to work, I just felt a breeze blow at me, and I began to feel uneasy. It was like something was circulating in my body, and I felt like committing a crime.”

The Nigerian Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate halt to unnecessary arrests and detention of youths across the country.

The warning is contained in a police wireless message dated December 13, 2024 and addressed to all the State Commands which was obtained by PidomNigeria.

In the letter signed by the Department of Operations for the Force Headquarters, the police hierarchy stated that such impunity and unlawful attitudes are portraying the Nigeria Police Force in bad light.

According to the message, all these infractions culminated to the #EndSARS protest which led to the destruction of properties and killing in the past.

The message with DTO: 111996/ and Ref: CB:0900/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.TIO/157 was titled: Order and directives: Arbitrary Arrest and Detention.

SaharaReporters recently reported that human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, warned that the Inspector-General of Police was illegally occupying the seat of IGP and that his mission was to destroy the Nigerian police.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), said Egbetokun had deliberately been engaging in egregious violations of human rights since he was appointed and his tenure illegally extended by President Bola Tinubu.

The former presidential candidate, in a post on his social media handle, had said that the IGP must be stopped before he completely destroyed the Nigerian police.

Sowore wrote, “This illegal IG of @PoliceNG, Kayode Egbetokun, has engaged in egregious violations of human rights since @officialABAT appointed him and illegally extended his tenure.

“He was the person who ordered the murders of #EndBadGovernance protesters, he orchestrated the prosecution of minors for treason, he has assisted powerful elites in arresting and jailing their critics, including @delefarotimi whom he abducted from Lagos to Ekiti on behalf of Chief Afe Babalola, SAN.

“Speed Darlington, a musician is languishing in detention because he had a beef with @burnaboy, @IjeleSpeaks2 has spent months in prison now because IGP Egbetokun connived with Evang.

“Chukwuebuka Obi to silence him, and now this lady, Olamide, had to be flown to Abuja because she made Facebook posts about the IGP and @Princemoye1, who’s had personal issues with her in Ogun State.

“IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria Police if we don’t act now.”

SaharaReporters also reported that the Nigeria Police Force on Saturday transferred female activist Abiodun Olamide Thomas, who was “abducted” from her home in Lagos State by lawless police personnel to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja.

A human rights advocacy organisation, the Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), which made this known in a post on its social media handle said that Thomas was transported by illegally constituted Nigeria Police Force Courier Service to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport en-route Abuja.

The organisation had said that the activist was moved to Abuja to face an illegal trial “sponsored by President Bola Tinubu through FPRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi and the IGP.”

Fire destroys goods, properties in Minna

Published

on

A series of fire in Minna, Niger State capital has left traders and business owners with losses, exposing gaps in emergency response and community relations.

At the Gwari Market, fire destroyed shops and goods worth millions of naira. The fire occurred in the morning when traders were opening their shops. The reason for the fire has not been ascertained.

Another fire occurred at Tunga, opposite the GTbank and behind a Motel, resulting in property damage, including a furniture store, a gas cylinder shop, and parts of the motel.

The fire would have been subdued, but for youths who obstructed firefighters attempting to control the blaze.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire service was contacted immediately the fire started, but their late arrival angered the youth, who stoned the firefighters while chanting “ba mu so” (we don’t want you). The aggression forced the firefighters to flee for safety, leaving residents to battle the inferno.

Community members attempted to extinguish the fire with limited resources, including a water tanker from a nearby construction company. However, the absence of proper equipment and the fire’s intensity resulted in extensive damage.

Eyewitnesses suggested the delay may have been caused by ongoing road construction hindering access, urg ing patience and cooperation with emergency responders.

“The youth’s actions only escalated the situation,” one observer noted. “We must work together and exercise restraint during emergencies to avoid worsening tragedies,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
