Renowned actress Olivia Hussey Eisley, celebrated for her iconic role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has died at the age of 73.
Her passing was confirmed through a heartfelt statement shared on her Instagram page.
The statement read, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th. Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.”
Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Olivia Hussey achieved international acclaim with her Golden Globe-winning performance as Juliet. Her portrayal remains a defining moment in her illustrious career, making her a symbol of timeless romance and artistry.
Beyond her career-defining role, Hussey showcased her versatility with memorable performances in the horror classic Black Christmas (1974) and the Agatha Christie-inspired Death on the Nile (1978). She reunited with Zeffirelli in the acclaimed 1977 TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth, delivering a heartfelt portrayal of Mary. Her other notable works include Psycho IV: The Beginning, Stephen King’s It miniseries, and the biographical film Mother Teresa. During the 2000s, she embraced diverse roles in films like the thriller El Grito and the comedy Tortilla Heaven.
