Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has expressed deep sympathy for the victims of the fire that destroyed the Timber Market, also known as Kasuwan Kara, on Wednesday.
The inferno, which broke out around 3 a.m., razed 500 makeshift shops, leaving behind goods worth millions of naira in ruins, according to market chairman Alhaji Modi Majo.
Governor Aliyu, accompanied by Minister of Labour and Employment Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi and Senator Aliyu Wamakko, visited the site on Friday. He described the disaster as “too devastating” and prayed that the victims receive better than what they lost.
“The losses are beyond imagination. I pray that the Almighty Allah prevents such tragedies in the future,” the Governor said.
He also urged the people of Sokoto to remain vigilant during the harmattan season, a period prone to fire outbreaks due to its windy nature. “We must be cautious with inflammable items during this season,” he added.
In response to the disaster, Governor Aliyu reassured residents of his administration’s commitment to protecting their lives and property. The Timber Sellers Association Chairman thanked the Governor for his personal visit and support.
To investigate the fire’s cause and assess the losses, the Governor has set up a seven-member committee. Chaired by Alhaji Dalhatu Sidi Mamman, the committee is tasked with identifying the affected traders and recommending possible assistance. The committee is expected to submit its report within three weeks.
