Police Invite Sowore Over Extortion Video As Activists Slam Move

By Kayode Sanni-Arewa

A group, the Social Crusade for a Sane Society, has condemned the Nigeria Police Force for inviting human rights activist Omoyele Sowore for questioning over a video that exposes police extortion.

The video, recorded during an altercation on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Access Road in Lagos, shows officers allegedly extorting money from motorists.

The group warned that any attempt to detain Sowore during his scheduled police interview on Monday would face strong resistance from Nigerians.

They emphasized that such actions would only deepen public distrust in security agencies and hinder efforts toward reform.

Sowore, however, has stated that he will honor the police’s invitation.

Despite the criticism, the Social Crusade for a Sane Society maintains that Sowore’s actions serve as an invaluable public service and that it is the officers involved in the extortion, not the whistleblower, who should be held accountable.

They called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be prosecuted to prevent future abuse.
