SAD! Police officer takes own life

Police in Kasese have launched an investigation into the tragic death of one of their own, police constable (PC) John Kanane, who is believed to have taken his own life.
Kanane, who was attached to Kasese Central Police Station, located in the Western region of Uganda, reportedly locked himself inside his room at the police barracks before turning his gun on himself on Friday evening.
According to Luke Mbusa, the Rwenzori East Police regional community liaison officer, passersby near the barracks heard a gunshot followed by fumes emanating from the room.
Fellow police officers who were attracted by the gun shot, rushed to the scene only to find Kanane lying in a pool of blood.
Mbusa described Kanane as a hardworking and highly regarded police officer who was often deployed to secure the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) offices due to his high level of integrity.
The late officer hailed from Budaka District, and authorities are working to establish the possible motive behind the incident.
The Eagle reports a last July incident in Kasese in which a man, Phinehas Kisanjya allegedly stabbed his brother Zephanus Kisanjya following a misunderstanding in a bar.
The incident in a bar in Kathoma trading centre, led to the victim being attacked in the neck and stomach following a fight that started in a bar in Kathoma trading centre.
Acting Rwenzori East Region police spokesperson Luke Mbusa, had said Phinehas had allegedly accused Zephanus of failing to pay him some money he owed leading to the confrontation.
Emmy Muhindo Kitsama, the chairperson of LC III for Rukoki sub-county, said after committing the crime, the suspect reported to the area defense secretary before handing himself over to the area police, The Observer reported.

Man walks with crutches on wedding day after accident just days before ceremony

A Nigerian man was involved in a car accident just days before his wedding after arriving in Nigeria, but he still used crutches to walk on his big day.
The story was shared in a post on the popular social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

According to the post, the man sustained injuries to his legs in the accident shortly after returning to Nigeria, just days before his wedding.
Despite his injuries, he didn’t let them stop him from participating in his wedding and enjoying his traditional marriage ceremony with his bride.
In the video shared online, the man can be seen walking slowly, using crutches, while walking beside his bride during the ceremony.
The video quickly gained attention, with many individuals flooding the comment section to share their thoughts.

Bandits kill 11 in fresh attacks across Sokoto villages

At least 11 persons have been reportedly killed in a series of coordinated attacks by armed bandits on three communities in Sokoto State.
This was revealed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post on his official X handle on Saturday.
According to Makama, the attacks occurred on the evening of Thursday, May 2, at about 7:30 p.m., targeting villages in Gwadabawa and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas.
“The assailants, said to be in large numbers, first stormed Satiru Village, killing five residents. They then moved to Kunkurus Village, where one person was killed, before proceeding to Shadawa community in Sabon Birni LGA, where they shot and killed another five people, bringing the total number of casualties to eleven,” he wrote.
Responding to the attacks, troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA, in collaboration with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Sokoto Community Guards, mobilized to the affected areas.
However, the terrorists had already fled before security forces arrived.
Makama noted that the troops are currently trailing the fleeing assailants in an intensified manhunt aimed at apprehending those responsible for the killings.

Police recover 21 stolen vehicles, arrest over 1,600 suspects in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command said it arrested 1,611 suspects linked to various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, in April alone.
The Command also said it recovered 21 stolen vehicle, Large quantity of codeine, large quantity of Tramadol Tablets, 10 ipads/tablets, 14 laptops, 19 powerbanks, two generator sets, 10 POS machines, 15 motorcycles, 109 ATM cards, 225 tablets of Exol, 52 tablets of Diazepam, one axe, three scissors, one crusher and 149 mobile phones.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, revealed these figures during a press briefing held at the Command Headquarters on Friday.
He said the recent upsurge in car theft and drug-related offences across the FCT prompted the command to intensify intelligence-led operations and conduct targeted raids in identified hotspots.
Ajao added that 15 suspects were arrested in connection with car theft, noting that six of the recovered vehicles have already been returned to their verified owners, while the remaining thirteen were displayed during the briefing.
“In one case, a Toyota Camry, popularly known as “pencil light,” was intercepted around the Central Area after it was found to be driven suspiciously by one Hassan Bukar, who attempted to evade arrest before being apprehended. Investigations revealed the car had been stolen from the premises of the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission.
“The suspect confessed to planning to sell the vehicle to a regular buyer in Kaduna State and was found in possession of master keys used for stealing cars.
“In another incident, a man identified as Daniel James reported that his Toyota Camry 2011, handed to a mechanic for repairs, had gone missing. Detectives traced the vehicle to a buyer in Gwarinpa and arrested the intermediary, while the mechanic, Abdulazeez Auwal Salisu, remains at large.”
Also, a government-issued Hilux van was recovered in Kaduna after it was taken without permission by an official driver, Abubakar Sadio, who intended to sell it. Another unregistered Hilux was also found in his possession, ” the CP added.
He also said five suspects were arrested in Life Camp for attempting to sell a black Mercedes Benz 4Matic E-400 that had been stolen from its original owner in Lekki, Lagos.
“The suspects were apprehended after a potential buyer raised suspicions and alerted the police.
“Perhaps the most extensive operation took place between April 30 and May 1, when a combined team of police operatives, soldiers, vigilantes, and other security agents raided several known criminal hideouts across the FCT.
“A total of 1,488 suspects were arrested during the raids, and a wide range of items were recovered, including cannabis, methamphetamine, tramadol, codeine, laptops, mobile phones, motorcycles, ATM cards, and other suspected stolen property, ” Ajao stated.
Adewale reiterated the Command’s commitment to making Abuja safer and called on residents to continue supporting the police by providing timely and useful information. He assured the public that all suspects currently in custody would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
