Ekiti Court dismisses another defamation case against Farotimi

By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
The Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, has dismissed the defamation case against lawyer Dele Farotimi, instituted against him by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola.
Farotimi was arrested on December 3, 2024, in Lagos by operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command over allegations of defamation against Babalola.
He was accused in a 14-count charge of defaming a renowned lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, in his book titled ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’ where he alleged that Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgement in the service of his clients.
At the hearing, the legal team of the prosecution, led by Mr. Martins A. Akala, sought the leave of the court to withdraw the charges against Farotimi, adding that the withdrawal was instructed by the police authority.
The defence team, led by Adejare Kembi and others, did not object to the prosecution request that the case be withdrawn.
In his ruling, the Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, having listened to both parties in the case, struck out the case as requested by the prosecution.

This remarkable individual’s inspiration to pursue tertiary education at an advanced age is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up on one’s dreams.

Dangerous move: Husband Showered Petrol On Wife To Set Her Ab|aze

By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
Woye Ella, a businesswoman, on Tuesday filed a petition for divorce at the FCT Customary Court in Garki, Abuja, citing her husband’s alleged attempt to set her ablaze after showering her with fuel.
In her petition, Ella described her husband as someone who overreacts to minor provocations, becoming hostile and violent.
She stated that on several occasions, her husband chased her with dangerous objects such as a screwdriver and a knife, making her fear for her safety.
Ella requested the court to dissolve their marriage due to these ongoing threats and abusive behavior.
“It got to a point that he poured petrol on me to set me on fire, it was my neighbours who saved my life that day.
“He was overwhelmed by our neighbours and was taken to a nearby police station where he was detained for four days, till his father came from the village to intervene.
“When he was asked the reason for his actions, he couldn’t mention anything tangible,” she said.
Ella also told the court that she eventually moved out of the house for fear of being killed by her estranged spouse.
She prayed the court to order her husband to vacate the apartment in which they were living, prior to her exit.
The petitioner also claimed that she is the owner of the property.
“I bought the land and built the house myself,” she said.
The respondent, who is a tiler, and simply identified by his first name, Joseph, however denied all his wife’s allegations.
The presiding judge, Festus Enomhonse, adjourned the matter until Feb. 24, for hearing.
