In a successful operation, the Kebbi State Police Command has neutralized four suspected kidnappers, detained one individual, and rescued a 60-year-old man, Umaru Bawa, in the Suru Local Government Area.
Furthermore, the police have recovered ₦3 million that had been previously paid as ransom.
A statement made available to newsmen on Saturday by the spokesman of the command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said the incident occurred on February 14, 2025, when armed men stormed Gobiraje village in Suru LGA and abducted Bawa.
“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Suru swiftly mobilized police operatives and local vigilantes, tracking the suspects to Tundafari Forest in the Dakingari axis.
“A gun battle ensued between security forces and the kidnappers, leading to the neutralization of four kidnappers and the arrest of one suspect with fatal injuries.
“Other suspects escape with gunshot wounds into the forest while we rescue the kidnapped victim unharmed and recover the sum of ₦3 million in ransom money,” the statement reads.
The statement added that the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M Sani, praised the officers for their bravery, professionalism, and swift response.
“The CP reassured the public of the command’s dedication to fighting crime and maintaining peace across the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station to enhance security efforts.
“The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts by security forces to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities in the region. Over the past months, Kebbi State has witnessed a rise in security challenges, prompting intensified operations by law enforcement agencies.
“Authorities have encouraged residents to cooperate with security forces, emphasizing that timely information is crucial in preventing criminal activities,” it added.
The command, however, urged residents to contact law enforcement or report any suspicious movements to the police hotline.
