South-West Governors will accord the late Afenifere cheiftain, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a befitting funeral, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said.

Sanwo-Olu, who is also the Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, made this known during a condolence visit to Adebanjo’s residence in Lekki, Lagos.

He said: “On behalf of all the South-West Governors, the people and government of Lagos State, we’re here to commiserate with the family, to appreciate them, and to say that Baba (Chief Ayo Adebanjo) lived a life full and worthy of emulation,”

He described the late nationalist as “a true Omoluabi” who built relationships across ethnic and cultural divides and consistently spoke truth to power.

“We cannot but celebrate him. We have also commiserated with the Afenifere Group and expressed that it is a big shoe that we don’t know how or who will fit in; but because it is a celebration of life, we will also be participating in one form or the other to ensure that we give him a befitting home calling,”

The late elder statesman, who is an advocate for democracy and good governance, passed away last Friday at his Lekki home at 96.

He is survived by his wife, Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, 94, as well as children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin and other top officials, were received by Adebanjo’s daughters, including Adeola Azeez.

The Governor urged leaders to emulate his values and contributions.

“These great men (Adebanjo and Clark) shaped this country to what it is today. For us in leadership, this is an opportunity to learn from their lives and continue to push this country forward,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu prayed for the repose of Adebanjo’s soul and strength for his family, the South-West, and the nation to bear the loss.
