ACIPA Appeals to Governor Fintiri for Clemency on Sunday Jackson’s Death Sentence

The Arewa Christian Indigenous Pastors Association (ACIPA) has written an open letter to the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Adamu Fintiri, pleading for clemency on behalf of Mr. Sunday Jackson, a young man sentenced to death.

In the letter signed by ACIPA Secretary, Kumtong Sylvia Timothy, the association urged the governor to use his constitutional powers to grant a pardon, citing humanitarian concerns and the need for justice.

The letter, which emerged after ACIPA’s recent meeting in Abuja, highlighted concerns about the legal implications of Jackson’s sentencing.

The association also emphasised that Jackson, who was only 20 years old at the time of the alleged crime, acted in self-defense.

ACIPA also raised concerns about perceived ethnic bias in the justice system, stating that Fulani herders often receive preferential treatment, and cautioned that such perceptions could fuel resentment and instability in the region.

“The judgment appears to be more about appeasing aggrieved Fulani communities than ensuring justice,” the letter stated.

ACIPA stressed the need for peace, reconciliation, and fair leadership, urging Governor Fintiri to consider the broader consequences of the case.

The association acknowledged opposition to clemency but insisted that “humanity does not recognize death as an option”. And called on the governor to exercise his prerogative of mercy as enshrined in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution and grant Jackson a second chance.

ACIPA concluded by stating that granting clemency would not only bring justice to Jackson but also serve as a beacon of hope for others facing similar circumstances.

Accoording to the association Governor Fintiri was yet to respond to the plea.
