The Labour Party (LP) has announced the indefinite suspension of its planned governorship primary election for Anambra State, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025.
The decision comes after the Supreme Court’s long-awaited ruling on Friday afternoon, which ousted the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure. The Court’s verdict mandates that Abure and his executive team at all levels vacate the party’s Secretariat.
Comrade Peter Okoye, the acting chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, confirmed the suspension during an interview with The Guardian in Awka on Friday. He stated that the governorship primary election would no longer take place as initially planned.
“Following the Supreme Court’s ruling this afternoon, any primary election conducted by an executive outside of Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership will not be valid,” Okoye explained.
He further clarified that Usman, as the newly appointed leader, along with her team, would take over the National Secretariat and all other party structures nationwide, effective immediately.
Okoye also announced that a meeting of the acting Anambra State executive had been scheduled for Saturday to discuss the next steps and promptly update the national secretariat. He reassured party members and supporters to remain steadfast and patient, noting that the issues would be addressed and resolved in due course.
While highlighting that the Labour Party remains the fastest-growing political party in Nigeria, especially in Anambra State, Okoye urged all members and stakeholders to stay vigilant and await further guidance from the national leadership.
