2027 realignment: So far, 10th HoR records 51 defections as PDP loses 32 seats

…PDP will never sink despite defections
…rather we will bounce back stronger

As 2025 prepares to eclipse into a pre-election year in 2026, all is not too well with the major opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party PDP losing majority of its members to the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Despite this trend, a PDP chieftain who spoke under the condition of anonymity declared that “whatever is happening, it’s a temporary situation, the PDP is still the strongest opposition party in Nigeria that people see as a religion.

The ruling party that’s actually using all weapons within its reach to get decampees is the biggest beneficiary of the gale of defections garnering 48 defectors out of 51.

While PDP manageably secured 2 while APGA secured one.

On Tuesday was another sad day for the PDP as three Members of the Minority Caucus from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the APC during plenary.

Rep. Aliyu Mustapha Abdullahi (Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) – formerly of the PDP, now of the APC;Rep. Sadiq Ango Abdullahi* (Sabon Gari Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) – formerly of the PDP, now of the APC; and* *Rep. Hussaini Abdulkarim Ahmed* (Kaduna South Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) – formerly of the PDP, now of the APC.

With this gale of defections, the APC now holds 13 of the 16 HoR seats from Kaduna State.

Conversely, the PDP has lost 32 seats, the Labour Party 12, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) three, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) two, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and APGA have each lost one.

Their letters of resignation were read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, at the commencement of proceedings, wherein they cited unresolved internal crises within the PDP as the reason for their decision.

The latest defections reflect the continuing political realignments within Kaduna State, as party structures reposition ahead of future elections.

The movement of key legislators into the ruling party underscores the deepening influence of the APC in the State and signals a reshaping of political alliances both within constituencies and across the broader regional political landscape.

A top chieftain of the PDP however noted that “even with just one governor standing the PDP can do better in future elections.

“As for those that are jumping from one place to the other, mark my words they will all come back begging to be reabsorbed.

“That’s when we will read the riot act to them that there’s a process because it’s not going to be business as usual again”, he added.
