Obi lauds Super Eagles sweet victory over Benin in WCQ

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their emphatic 4–0 triumph over the Benin Republic in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, describing the win as a “brilliant and sweet victory” that lifted the spirits of millions of Nigerians.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi praised the players for displaying the true Nigerian spirit — one defined by determination, unity, and strength.

“I watched with so much confidence and pride, and it was such a brilliant and sweet victory against the Benin Republic,” Obi wrote. “The performance was really super, showing that it’s possible. You showed true Nigerian spirit, strength, dominance, and unity on the field. This is the power of perseverance and teamwork. Well done, Super Eagles. Congratulations.”

Obi’s message resonated with many football fans, especially as the win rekindled hope for Nigeria’s return to the World Cup stage after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Despite the commanding performance, the victory was not enough to guarantee Nigeria automatic qualification. The Super Eagles finished second in their group with 17 points, narrowly behind South Africa, who topped the table with 18 points after defeating Rwanda 3–0 in their final match.

The match saw Victor Osimhen deliver a standout performance with a hat-trick, while Frank Onyeka added the fourth goal to seal the rout. The result showcased Nigeria’s attacking prowess and depth of talent, yet the team fell just short of direct qualification.

However, Nigeria remains in contention for a place at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Super Eagles are expected to advance through the play-offs, where the best runners-up across the African qualification groups will battle for the remaining slots.

Fans across the country have praised the team’s renewed energy and cohesion under the current coaching setup, urging them to maintain momentum ahead of the crucial play-off stage.
