Anambra 2025 LP Candidate George Moghalu Resigns from Labour Party
The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2025 Anambra State election, Mr. George Moghalu, has officially resigned his membership of the party, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Johnson Okoye. The statement, titled “Moghalu Resigns Membership of Labour Party,” announced that the former candidate had formally communicated his decision to the party.
According to the statement, Moghalu submitted a personally signed resignation letter dated January 26, 2026, to the chairman of the Labour Party in his ward at Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State. The resignation took immediate effect upon submission.
The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) did not disclose the reasons behind his decision to leave the party. However, his letter was described as courteous and appreciative, reflecting a tone of gratitude rather than confrontation.
In the letter, Moghalu thanked the Labour Party at the ward, state, and national levels for granting him the platform to contest the November 2025 off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State. He acknowledged the cooperation, goodwill, and support he received from party leaders and members throughout the electioneering period.
Part of the letter read:
“I bring you the good wishes of my family and write to formally inform you of my resignation from the Labour Party, effective January 26, 2026.
“Let me also thank the party, through you, for providing me the opportunity to use the Labour Party platform to contest the last governorship election of our state.”
Moghalu further expressed his appreciation by urging the ward chairman to convey his regards to other party members, stating:
“Please accept, as always, the assurance of my sincere regards and kindly convey same to the members.”
As of the time of filing this report, Moghalu has not indicated his next political destination or whether he plans to align with another political party. His resignation has nonetheless fueled speculation about possible realignments ahead of future political contests in Anambra State.

Kwankwaso, NNPP Feel Betrayed By Gov Yusuf’s Defection — Party Spokesperson
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has described the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an act of betrayal of the party and its leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
NNPP National Spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, stated this on Monday while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Asked whether Kwankwaso felt personally betrayed by the governor’s decision, Johnson said the feeling went beyond the party leader to the people of Kano State.
“Naturally, he [Kwankwaso] feels betrayed. But it is not just about him. The people [Kano] endured eight years of what they described as bad governance and came out in their numbers to give a mandate to the NNPP through the leadership of Kwankwaso.”
He noted that the party had no existing political structure in the state before the election but still secured victory.
“They voted the NNPP from scratch. We had no councillor, no chairman, yet we won the state. They stood by Abba Kabir Yusuf from the tribunal to the Court of Appeal and up to the Supreme Court,” the spokesman said.
Johnson argued that defecting to the APC without consulting the electorate amounted to a betrayal of public trust.
“Without consulting the people, you hand power back to those who were voted out after eight years. That is an act of betrayal, no matter how you try to sugar-coat it,” he said.
Reacting to claims that Yusuf could have become governor without Kwankwaso’s support, Johnson dismissed the narrative.
“It is easy to say that now. They are enjoying their five minutes. I am sure His Excellency, Abba Kabir Yusuf, would not stand up anywhere in the world to say that,” he said.
Also speaking on the programme, NNPP Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Karaye, said the party was deeply hurt by the development but remained politically strong in Kano.
“We are really devastated. We feel betrayed and we are not happy with this development. But NNPP is still strong and remains the party to beat in Kano,” Karaye said.
He alleged that key party stakeholders were aware of the governor’s plans to leave but were sidelined and dismissed claims that Yusuf left due to internal crises within the NNPP.
He further alleged that party leaders had limited access to the governor and were unable to offer advice.
“The governor closed his doors. There was no access to him,” he said.
Governor Yusuf officially defected to the APC on Monday alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine members of the House of Representatives.
The announcement was made at a political event held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.
Addressing party leaders, lawmakers and supporters, Yusuf said the decision followed extensive consultations across the state.
The governor explained that the move was aimed at strengthening governance and accelerating development.
“We are choosing partnership rather than polarisation. Political parties are vehicles; the destination is to bring positive change to the people of Kano. Judge this decision by the work we do for the people,” Yusuf said.
Prominent APC leaders at the event included former party National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje; Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabiru Bichi.
Yusuf’s emergence as Kano State governor was closely linked to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement until their split in January 2026.
Governor Yusuf’s rise to the Kano governorship was closely tied to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement until their split.
Yusuf was widely seen as Kwankwaso’s political protégé and rose through the movement’s strong grassroots structure and popular support.
Kwankwaso’s backing was widely credited for Yusuf’s victory in the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, where he polled 1,019,602 votes to defeat the APC candidate.
However, Yusuf’s time in office brought growing pressure for him to assert independence as a constitutionally elected governor.
While he remained loyal to Kwankwaso during prolonged court battles over his mandate, tensions over political control and autonomy eventually strained their relationship.

Plateau set for massive gains as Mutfwang perfects move to APC – PVD
Ahead of the formal reception of Governor Caleb Mutfwang into the All Progressives Congress (APC), a socio-political group, Plateau Vanguard for Democracy (PVD), has outlined the enormous benefits the state stands to gain from the governor’s defection, urging stakeholders to embrace the development as a turning point for unity and progress.
The group called on political leaders, residents and all stakeholders in Plateau State to view the governor’s alignment with the ruling party as an opportunity to end years of divisive politics and channel energies towards peace, development and inclusive governance.
Speaking through its chairman, Mr. Christopher Ishaku, PVD described the defection as a strategic realignment that could transform political rivalry into collaboration for the greater good of the state.
“We should see this moment as one in which valuable assets that had been deployed in political brinkmanship will now be channelled toward the development of Plateau State,” Ishaku stated.
He emphasised that bringing together the governor’s political structure and former rivals in the APC would create a stronger, more unified platform to tackle the state’s longstanding challenges.
“The defection of the governor will consolidate the different tendencies in the state into a cohesive body that will ultimately make Plateau better,” he added.
The group insisted that Plateau’s advancement depends more on cooperation among leaders than on rigid party loyalties, stressing that the new political configuration should drive strategic unity and a renewed focus on tangible governance results.
According to PVD, the evolving landscape presents a rare catalyst for healing divisions, fostering inclusive leadership and delivering real improvements in security, economy and infrastructure for residents.
Governor Mutfwang’s defection has already seen him receive his APC membership card and pledge support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
As arrangements conclude for the governor’s grand reception into the party, many observers believe the development positions Plateau for stronger federal support and internal harmony.

Four key loyalists of Kwankwaso resign from Gov Yusuf cabinet
Kano State is witnessing a significant political realignment as four key aides of Governor Abba Yusuf resign from his cabinet following his exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Friday.
Sunusi Sirajo, the governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, led the departures, citing a break with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s political ideology. The move was announced via social media, highlighting tensions within the state’s political landscape.
Joining him are Sumaila Abdullahi, Provost of the Anti‑Corruption Institute; Sadiq Kura Mohammad, Managing Director of Kano Zoo; and Abdullahi Ahmad Namama, Senior Special Assistant on Intergovernmental and Foreign Affairs. All were longstanding loyalists of Senator Kwankwaso.
Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, confirmed that replacements are already underway, including the appointment of Mustapha Hamza Buhari as Special Adviser on Political Matters.
Symbolising the shift, NNPP flags have been removed from the Kano Government House, while defections continue among state lawmakers, House of Representatives members, and local government chairmen.
Despite the upheaval, Senator Kwankwaso has called on supporters to remain loyal to the Kwankwasiyya movement, urging them not to abandon the party’s ideology amid the departures.
Political analysts say the resignations mark a turning point in Kano politics, signalling a reshaping of alliances and raising questions about the future influence of the NNPP in the state.
