Finally, INEC Recognises Abdulrahman led PDP Caretaker Commttee

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally recognised the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed

Mohammed, alongside the Acting National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, was present at the first quarterly consultative meeting between INEC and leaders of registered political parties in Abuja. The high-level meeting is traditionally reserved strictly for recognised national chairmen and national secretaries — a development widely interpreted as an institutional endorsement of the Mohammed-led caretaker committee.

The PDP has been facing an intense internal battle between factions loyal to Wike and those aligned with other power blocs within the party, especially after the 2023 general elections.

The crisis deepened over disputes surrounding the office of national secretary and control of the party’s National Working Committee.

Legal fireworks followed, culminating in a ruling by the Federal High Court in Ibadan directing INEC to recognise the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee as the authentic leadership of the party. Though the ruling remains contentious within PDP circles, INEC’s latest engagement appears to signal compliance with the court’s directive.

Political analysts say the move could significantly reshape the PDP’s internal power balance ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, particularly as realignments intensify within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
