A wave of grief has swept through Nigeria’s civil society space following the sudden death of Comrade Aanu Obawolu Adedoja, a well-known human rights activist and advocate for social justice.
Comrade Aanu tragically slumped and died at the entrance of her home in Lagos on Saturday evening shortly after returning from her shop.
The activist, known for her vibrant energy and dedication to activism, was actively involved in several civil society groups including the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and the People’s Conscience.
Confirming the news, a fellow activist said, “Comrade Obawolu Adedoja Aanu, a member of civil society, passed away yesterday (Saturday) evening. She slumped and died at the entrance of her house while returning home from her shop. She was a very active and energetic comrade.”
Aanu was a consistent face at protests, civic engagements, and advocacy meetings, often championing causes aimed at holding leaders accountable and defending the rights of the underprivileged.
Her death has left her colleagues and members of the human rights community in deep shock and sorrow, with tributes already pouring in on social media and within activist circles.
The tragic incident comes just four months after the death of another renowned activist, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, popularly known as “Revolutionary Alfa,” rocked the Nigerian news media. Comrade Sulaiman lost his life in a car crash along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Road in Ogun State.
Sulaiman, who was 53 at the time, was travelling to Ibadan when the accident occurred. Until his death, he served as the Executive Chairman of the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) and Chairman of the Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEOS).
