The House of Representatives minority caucus has hailed Dr Doyin Abiola describing her as an iconic journalist and heroine of Nigerian democracy.
This was disclosed in a statement jointly issued by the caucus on Thursday signed by its leaders: Rep Kingsley Chinda, Leader, Rt. Hon.Dr. Ali Isa J.C Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki Deputy Minority Leader ,Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi
Deputy Minority Whip stating that:
“It is with a heavy heart, and sense of loss that the Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives express our sincere condolences to the Abiola Family, members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, and numerous others on the passing of Dr. Mrs Doyin Abiola; one of the wives of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, on August 5th, 2025 at the age of 82. 
“Members of the Caucus are heartbroken by the death of an illustrious and distinguished woman who, in her lifetime achieved legacies of leadership, mentorship, accolades, and inspiration.
“As a journalist, she was the first woman to edit a national newspaper – National Concord; and first female Managing Director and Editor in Chief of a national newspaper – National Concord.
“She positively influenced public opinion, and broke barriers with bold, courageous commentaries on gender issues, equity, and social justice through her column, “TIRO” in the Daily Sketch newspaper.
” Through her passion for excellence, and commitment to purposeful leadership, and development, she mentored many journalists, women, and youths that have risen to the zenith of their respective careers.
” A serial winner of many awards, within and outside the country, she emerged as a heroine of democracy when, during the Abacha regime she was at the forefront of resilient advocacy against military dictatorship, and political subjugation.
“The Caucus notes that during her over three decades of career odysseys, Dr. Abiola exhibited unusual bravery, uncommon knowledge, and unflinching sagacity in the pursuit of noble and novel causes towards installing a government by the people (Democracy), and ensuring national development. She was an inimitable spirit who served humanity with passion, purpose, and persistency.
“Though sorely pained that she died when her wealth of knowledge, and global-view experiences are needed as our democracy forges ahead in the quest for nation building, the Caucus is extremely happy that through her words, deeds, actions, and sacrifices, Dr. Abiola positively impacted many people.
” Throughout her lifetime, she was a beacon of hope, and inspiration to those in the media, civil society, academia, women groups, and other development organizations.
” We are hopeful that her life will serve as a worthy mirror, and veritable compass through which the present, and future generations of those in the media, advocacy, and other related professions will tap from, and be assessed.
“The Caucus prays that God Almighty will grant her children, and the entire members of the Abiola Family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. We also pray that God will repose her soul, and grant her eternal rest.
