Diesel Supply to Telecoms Restored After ONSA, NCC Step In — Seven-Day Deadline Set to Resolve Outstanding Issues

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), led by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has facilitated the resumption of diesel supply to IHS, the telecom infrastructure firm managing over 16,000 base stations for MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile. This development has brought immediate relief to telecom operators and millions of subscribers nationwide.

The Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) confirmed yesterday that it has suspended its strike action, which had halted fuel deliveries to the telecom sector. The decision came after high-level intervention by the ONSA and NCC.

NOGASA President, Bennett Korie, explained in Abuja that members had withdrawn services due to years of unpaid debts from various sectors, with IHS singled out for its refusal to attend a scheduled reconciliation meeting on July 31. The industrial action threatened to cause widespread network outages across Nigeria, particularly in rural and off-grid locations where diesel-powered generators remain essential.

Nigeria’s telecom industry reportedly consumes over 40 million litres of diesel each month, with rural supply costs averaging 37% higher than in urban areas.

Korie stated that NOGASA members will resume fuel supply immediately but have given authorities a seven-day window to resolve all outstanding issues. If the matter remains unsettled, the association will reinstate its service withdrawal without further notice.

He also clarified that the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) was not involved in the strike, noting their concerns were strictly about worker safety.

To recover lost time, suppliers have been directed to operate round-the-clock deliveries to IHS sites across the country.
