The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will present Certificates of Return to winners of the federal legislative bye-elections held last Saturday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the presentation would take place on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the Commission’s national headquarters.
He explained that, in line with Section 72(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Certificates of Return will be handed to the Senators-elect for Anambra South and Edo Central Senatorial Districts, as well as the five newly elected members of the House of Representatives from constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States.
For state constituencies, Olumekun noted that Certificates of Return would be presented by Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in the affected states on Friday, August 22, 2025. These constituencies include Ganye (Adamawa), Onitsha North I (Anambra), Basawa and Zaria/Kewaye (Kaduna), Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa (Kano), Okura (Kogi), Munya (Niger), and Karim Lamido I (Taraba).
He further confirmed that returns had been successfully made in two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies, and eight state constituencies.
However, the election for Kaura Namoda South State Constituency in Zamfara State was declared inconclusive after violence disrupted voting in five polling units across two wards. A total of 3,572 registered voters were affected, of which 3,265 had collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). With the margin of lead being 1,662—less than the number of affected voters—INEC invoked Section 24(3) and (4) of the Electoral Act 2022 to order a supplementary poll, scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Meanwhile, INEC confirmed the conclusion of two re-run elections earlier ordered by the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals in Enugu and Kano States. In Enugu South I State Constituency, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party (LP) emerged victorious, while Ya’u Garba Gwarmai of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared winner in the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State.
