The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has raised a fresh alarm over the rising wave of attacks on schools, warning that a nationwide strike may be unavoidable if government fails to stop the escalating violence.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, said teachers across the country are “deeply outraged” by the recent incidents in Kebbi and Niger States, where terrorists and bandits unleashed deadly assaults on learning institutions.

He condemned the killing of a Vice Principal and a security guard, as well as the abduction of 25 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State. The Union also denounced the kidnapping of more than 300 pupils and 12 staff members from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara LGA of Niger State.

According to the NUT, the attacks are “barbaric, unacceptable, and a direct blow to the foundation of education in Nigeria,” stressing that classrooms should never be spaces of fear.

“These grievous attacks are not just assaults on teachers and learners; they threaten the future of the nation. Schools are supposed to be safe spaces for nurturing young minds. The destruction of these environments puts our children and our country in danger,” Amba said.

The Union lamented that several schools in affected areas have already shut down, leaving children displaced and exposing the government’s poor implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration.

NUT called on the Federal and State Governments to urgently intensify efforts to rescue abducted students and staff while strengthening security in schools, especially in communities vulnerable to attacks.

“The latest incidents show that teachers and students are becoming endangered species. If this horrific trend continues, NUT may have no choice but to direct all teachers nationwide to withdraw their services until their safety is guaranteed,” Amba warned. “The attacks must stop now.”
