Nigeria and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have moved to strengthen their long-standing strategic partnership following high-level talks held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the Netherlands’ Sahel Envoy, Robert Zimmerman, alongside members of his delegation, for wide-ranging discussions aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and tackling shared regional and global challenges on Tuesday in Abuja.
The meeting reviewed the historic relationship between both countries, which dates back to 1960, and explored opportunities for closer collaboration in key areas including trade and investment, energy transition, agriculture, water management and youth empowerment.
Other issues discussed included migration governance, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, counter-terrorism efforts and cooperation within multilateral institutions.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a partnership built on mutual respect, equality and shared values, with a strong focus on addressing the root causes of insecurity, promoting sustainable development and strengthening people-to-people relations. The talks also highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy, knowledge exchange and private-sector engagement in driving inclusive economic growth.
The engagement ended with a renewed resolve to maintain sustained dialogue and expand cooperation in support of regional stability, economic diversification and a rules-based international order.
