President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated retired Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa as National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing Adamawa State.
The nomination was conveyed in a letter to the Senate and read during Tuesday’s plenary by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
According to the letter, the appointment is in line with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to nominate members of certain federal executive bodies, subject to Senate confirmation.
“In accordance with the provisions of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I hereby forward for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (Rtd) as National Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission, representing Adamawa State,” the President stated in the correspondence.
President Tinubu urged the upper chamber to give the nomination expeditious consideration.
“I trust that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner,” the letter added.
Following the announcement, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on INEC for screening and further legislative action.
“The nomination is hereby referred to the Senate Committee on INEC for necessary screening and to report back to plenary within one week,” Akpabio said.
If confirmed, Malafa will join the electoral body at a critical period, with responsibilities that include overseeing electoral administration and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic processes.
The development underscores the administration’s ongoing efforts to fill key positions within strategic national institutions ahead of future electoral engagements.
