Germany and Japan (1950)
These two countries were barred from participating in the 1950 World Cup due to their roles in World War II.
South Africa (1970–1990)
South Africa was prohibited from competing because of its apartheid laws. The nation was removed from FIFA
in 1976 and was reinstated in 1991 after the end of apartheid.
Mexico (1990)
Mexico received a two-year suspension from FIFA events for using overage players in a youth competition.
Chile (1994)
Chile faced penalties after goalkeeper Roberto Rojas pretended to be hurt during a World Cup qualifier against Brazil in 1989.
Myanmar (2006)
Myanmar was banned from the qualification process after it withdrew from a World Cup qualifier with Iran.
Iraq (2008)

Zimbabwe was penalized after the government’s dissolution of the national football association.
Kenya (2022)
Kenya was banned due to issues of financial mismanagement, although this suspension was later lifted.

Congo was recently banned due to outside interference in its football administration.
