A Magistrates’ Court in the Isabo area of the Abeokuta metropolis, has remanded a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, in prison over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion, and the murder of a corper in Ogun State, Victoria Ariyo.
23-year-old Ariyo, who served under the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), reportedly died from pregnancy complications.
Sources disclosed that the late Ariyo was involved in a romantic relationship with the Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the NYSC, Abass Olalekan, which eventually led to pregnancy and a termination that resulted in her death.
Olalekan was arrested and arraigned on Monday before the presiding magistrate, A. K. Araba, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion.
The NYSC LGI pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.
Meanwhile, the nurse who allegedly supplied drugs to the deceased in an attempt to terminate the pregnancy was on Thursday arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion, and murder.
The police counsel, Solomon Babalola, moved a motion ex parte, praying the court for an order to remand the defendant, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
He told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January and March at Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta, claiming that the drugs allegedly led to Ariyo’s death.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs. O.O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the request and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the State DPP.
Sam-Obaleye thereafter adjourned the case until May 26 for mention.
