The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to take swift action to control the rising price of aviation fuel, cautioning that the increase is putting intense strain on Nigeria’s airline sector.
The House also called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, to establish a direct price stabilisation arrangement with domestic airlines to ensure more predictable and affordable fuel costs.
This resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance by Rep. Paschal Agbodike on Tuesday during plenary.
In presenting the motion, Agbodike explained that aviation fuel, commonly referred to as Aviation Turbine Kerosene, represents between 40 and 60 per cent of airlines’ operating expenses, making it the most significant cost burden for domestic carriers.
He pointed out that many operators are finding it increasingly difficult to stay afloat while still meeting required service standards alongside the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
The situation, he noted, has already forced some airlines to cut back on flight schedules or ground parts of their fleet, resulting in reduced capacity across the industry.
Agbodike also drew attention to the added pressure from foreign exchange challenges, which complicate the importation of aircraft components. Combined with soaring fuel prices, these factors are deepening financial difficulties for local airlines and raising concerns about their long-term survival.
“The continued volatility in jet fuel pricing, if not urgently addressed, could lead to the collapse of major domestic airlines, with far-reaching consequences for the economy, jobs and regional connectivity,” he said.
The House unanimously adopted the motion through a voice vote and mandated its Committees on Aviation, Petroleum Resources (Downstream), and Finance to investigate the persistent rise in jet fuel prices and report back within two weeks.
