Yiaga Africa has alleged discrepancies between the ballot papers, result sheets, and the list of candidates published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the ongoing governorship elections in Ekiti State.

In a statement signed by Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, Chair, 2026 Ekiti Election Observation Mission Yiaga Africa, and Samson Itodo, Executive Director, Yiaga Africa, the duo drew attention specifically to the Form EC8A polling unit result sheets, which provided spaces for 15 political parties, as against 19 parties carried by the ballot papers in circulation.
Yiaga noted that INEC’s final list of candidates, as updated and available on the INEC website as of 18th June 2026, reflected 14 parties that fielded candidates.

“Yiaga Africa is observing the Ekiti State governorship election, and our preliminary findings raise serious concerns about the consistency of the materials INEC has deployed.

“As of 8:30 am, 96% of the observers from our 250 randomly sampled polling units were at the polling unit to observe the election.

“Yiaga Africa recognizes the context. After INEC published its initial list of 12 candidates in January 2026, subsequent court rulings (notably on the PDP’s candidacy) and late administrative changes altered party and candidate participation.
“Some of those changes do not appear to have been fully and consistently reflected across all election materials.
“Also, the public may not have fully received information about these changes.

“These inconsistencies might create confusion during voting and collation. Where result sheets include parties that are not on the ballot, presiding officers may record zero votes for parties that voters did not see.

“Conversely, where voters cast ballots for parties not reflected on the result sheet, such actions could create uncertainty in recording, reconciliation, and collation.”

To Polling Units
Yiaga Africa, therefore, called on INEC to: publicly clarify, without delay, the final list of parties and candidates, and explain any differences between the ballot papers, result sheets, and earlier announcements.

It also demanded that the Commission “Issue clear written instructions to presiding and collation officers on completing result sheets consistently with the law and relevant court judgments, including how to treat parties on the result sheet but not on the ballot and vice versa.”

The traditional ruler reportedly died in hospital after a brief illness following his release from captivity.

A traditional ruler in Kwara State has died days after regaining his freedom from kidnappers who abducted him during an attack on his community.

The monarch, whose identity was not immediately disclosed in the report, was kidnapped on August 22 when armed men invaded Igbesi community in the state.

He was rescued five days later during a security operation in the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro axis, alongside two other kidnapping victims.

However, the monarch reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday at a hospital where he was receiving treatment following his release.

His death was announced on Saturday by the National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Bisi Fakayode, who expressed sadness over the development and prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul.

Confirming the development, one of the deceased’s sons, Prince Olasunkanmi, told PUNCH Online that his father died after a brief illness.

“Yes, the news is true. He died after a brief illness following his release. We took him to the hospital, hoping he would survive, but he died there very early this morning,” he said.

How the monarch was rescued

The monarch was among three kidnapping victims rescued by security operatives during a coordinated operation around the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro axis of Kwara State.

The operation followed information received at about 10am at the Oro Police Station from a vigilante member, who reported that one of his colleagues had sustained a gunshot injury while in the bush around Elerin/Ijomu-Oro.

Acting on the information, the Divisional Police Officer of the Oro Police Station led a combined team of police operatives, military personnel and vigilantes to the area.

According to the Kwara State Police Command, the suspected kidnappers opened fire after sighting the advancing security team, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

One suspected kidnapper was killed during the encounter, while the remaining members of the gang fled into the surrounding terrain as security operatives pursued them.

The team subsequently located and rescued the three victims, who were evacuated for medical attention.

The monarch’s death comes days after the successful rescue operation, raising fresh concerns over the health consequences of prolonged captivity and the dangers faced by victims of kidnapping.

The child was rescued at a hotel in Abia State after police allegedly uncovered a plot to traffic her for financial gain.

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a father and three other suspects over an alleged attempt to sell and traffic his 16-month-old daughter for financial gain.

The suspects were arrested on September 7, 2026, by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Gender Unit, at a hotel in Obi, Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, disclosed the development on Friday while briefing journalists on the command’s achievements since he assumed office on August 10.

Afolabi said the suspects were transferred from the Central Police Station, Umuahia, in connection with alleged conspiracy and child trafficking.

According to the commissioner, preliminary investigations established that one of the suspects was the biological father of the child.

He added that further investigation indicated that the alleged attempt to traffic the girl was motivated by the suspects’ desire to make money.

The child was rescued and handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protection, while the four suspects remained in police custody as investigations continued.

Several suspects allegedly linked to the incident, including individuals suspected of assisting with the movement or distribution of ransom money, have been arrested.

The police, however, said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the alleged criminal network.

The suspect was reportedly arrested after a female victim was robbed of her Toyota Highlander, mobile phones, handbag and other personal belongings.

The Federal Government has approved the takeover of admissions into Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), in a major reform aimed at sanitising the admission process in polytechnics and other institutions offering HND programmes.

The decision means prospective HND students will, from the current admission session, have their admissions processed through JAMB under a centralised system.

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) disclosed this in a circular dated September 9, 2026, signed by its Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, and obtained by LEADERSHIP Weekend.

The directive followed a meeting involving the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa; JAMB; NBTE; the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC); and officials of the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the NBTE, the new system is designed to tackle illegal, irregular and compromised admissions, particularly cases that could leave students stranded after completing their programmes.

The board said some students admitted through questionable channels had faced difficulties securing NYSC mobilisation after obtaining their HND certificates.

“All HND admissions in all institutions shall from this session be taken over by JAMB to provide centralised process and avoid illegal and compromised admissions, jeopardising students’ mobilisation for NYSC after HND,” the circular stated.

The Federal Ministry of Education is expected to issue a detailed statement on the new policy next week.

NBTE also directed that comprehensive guidelines for HND admissions be developed immediately and submitted to JAMB to guide the implementation of the new digital admission platform.

The proposed guidelines will cover important issues, including the waiting period required for National Diploma (ND) holders before progressing to HND programmes.

They will also clarify exemptions applicable to certain ND health-related programmes.

Part-time ND admissions capped at 50%

The government also approved a new limit for part-time National Diploma admissions following the decision to bring all part-time ND admissions under JAMB.

Under the new arrangement, institutions will be permitted to admit part-time students up to 50 per cent of their approved full-time admission quota.

“Now that all part-time ND admissions are under the JAMB, the proportion of part-time students is pegged at 50 per cent of the approved full-time quota,” NBTE stated.

The Federal Government further reaffirmed an earlier NBTE directive concerning candidates holding combined National Certificate in Education (NCE) and HND qualifications.

In a separate circular issued on September 7, NBTE directed that candidates with an NCE/HND combination should not be presented for NYSC mobilisation.

The latest reforms are expected to strengthen central oversight of admissions into Nigeria’s technical and polytechnic institutions while reducing irregular admission practices and protecting students from complications after graduation.
