Fresh violence has erupted in Kaduna State as suspected terrorists, reportedly among groups that had earlier embraced government-backed peace initiatives, killed a commercial driver and abducted nine other persons in separate attacks along the notorious Kaduna–Birnin Gwari corridor and within Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
The incidents have once again raised concerns about the effectiveness of ongoing peace agreements with armed groups operating in the area, as residents continue to face deadly attacks, kidnappings, and other criminal activities.
According to information made available to journalists by a family member of one of the victims, the slain driver was identified as Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, a grandson of a District Head in the Birnin Gwari Emirate.
A family source disclosed that Ibrahim was attacked and killed at Kwanan Giginya, a section of the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway that has witnessed several security incidents in recent years. The source explained that armed men ambushed the commercial vehicle he was driving and opened fire on it without warning.
Ibrahim was reportedly killed instantly during the attack, while the gunmen abducted approximately five passengers travelling in the vehicle before escaping into nearby forests.
In another incident that occurred around the same period, four farmers were reportedly kidnapped while working on their farmlands in the Kurgi area of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
Residents said the farmers were carrying out their normal agricultural activities when armed assailants stormed the area and forcefully took them away to an unknown destination. Their whereabouts remain uncertain as of the time of filing this report.
The two attacks have heightened fears among residents of Birnin Gwari and surrounding communities, many of whom say insecurity remains a major challenge despite repeated assurances by authorities that efforts are being made to restore peace in the region.
The Kaduna–Birnin Gwari road has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous routes in northern Nigeria due to persistent attacks by armed groups, including kidnappings for ransom, highway robberies, and killings.
Community members lamented that the continued violence has negatively affected farming, transportation, trade, and other economic activities in the area. Many farmers now fear going to their fields, while motorists and passengers remain apprehensive about travelling along the highway.
Residents also alleged that armed groups operating within the forests surrounding Birnin Gwari regularly dispossess travellers and villagers of motorcycles, mobile phones, cash, and other valuables during attacks. They claimed that numerous incidents of abduction and violence often go unreported due to fear of reprisals and lack of confidence in security responses.
The latest attacks have prompted renewed calls for urgent intervention by security agencies. Community leaders and residents are urging the military, police, and other security operatives to intensify patrols along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway and increase their presence in vulnerable rural communities.
They argued that only sustained security operations and improved intelligence gathering can help stem the recurring attacks and restore confidence among residents who continue to live under the threat of violence.
