2027 Presidency: No Candidate, Including Peter Obi, Can Fix Nigeria — Datti

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said none of the politicians seeking the presidency in 2027 has what it takes to significantly improve Nigeria.

Baba-Ahmed made the assessment during an interview on the Mic On Podcast, where he also reflected on Obi’s political trajectory since their joint presidential bid under the Labour Party.

He specifically included Obi among those he believes cannot transform the country if elected president in 2027.

According to him, Obi abandoned what he described as his “comfort zone” when he left the Labour Party and subsequently moved into the political realignment surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Baba-Ahmed recalled that he had privately cautioned Obi against joining the political platform, saying subsequent developments vindicated his position.

He said he met Obi at the Yar’Adua Centre shortly before the former Anambra State governor became involved with the ADC and advised him against the move.

“I told him that this is the last time that I’m coming to this place, but I want to tell you that this is not a place for you,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He claimed that Obi eventually left the ADC about four months after joining the coalition, which he said confirmed his earlier concerns.

“Was I proven wrong? I was proven right, and within four months, Obi left ADC,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed also said he was reluctant to delve into the political activities of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, saying his criticism was not driven by personal attacks.

“I don’t like people who contradict themselves, and I don’t want to go into criticising the politics of Atiku because that’s not what I’m about,” he said.
