The Osun State Police Command has arrested a woman following the death of a vigilante member identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, after an alleged sexual encounter in Ile-Ife.
The incident reportedly occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Odi-Olokun area of the ancient city.
The woman was subsequently taken into custody at the Moore Police Division, according to reports.
A situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said Apetu was found in severe distress shortly after the encounter.
The report stated that the man was gasping for breath, screaming and pleading with the woman before he eventually collapsed and died.
His remains were reportedly deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, for further examination.
Meanwhile, the cause of death has yet to be officially determined.
Some residents reportedly attributed the incident to what they described as a “thunderbolt”, a traditional belief that a person affected by a supposed supernatural spell could harm another person through sexual contact.
However, there is no established medical or scientific evidence supporting the claim as an explanation for Apetu’s death.
The police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the outcome of any autopsy or medical examination may help determine the actual cause of death.
