Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been hospitalised after collapsing while watching the club’s second-team training session on Friday.
The Bundesliga club confirmed that the 40-year-old Belgian required medical attention after collapsing during the reserve team’s training session.
“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care,” Bayern said in a statement.
The club added that Kompany’s coaching staff would oversee training and match activities until further notice.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club’s immediate priority was the coach’s health and recovery.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Eberl said.
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
Kompany had reportedly been battling a virus for about a week and missed Bayern’s pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Arsenal.
His assistant, Aaron Danks, stood in for him at the press conference, with German football journalist Taufig Khalil reporting that Kompany had been unwell since Bayern’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig the previous weekend.
Despite his illness, Kompany took charge from the touchline when Bayern hosted Arsenal on Wednesday night, with his presence reportedly surprising some observers who had expected Danks to oversee the match.
Khalil said Kompany appeared unwell during the Arsenal game but remained on the touchline because of the importance of the Champions League fixture.
Reports from Germany said Kompany was in stable condition in hospital, although Bayern did not disclose further details about his condition.
The former Manchester City and Belgium defender was appointed Bayern coach in 2024 and has since led the German giants in domestic and European competition.
Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, but Kompany’s coaching staff will take charge of the team while he remains under medical care.
