American singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.
Brown, 37, was sentenced on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to affray in connection with the incident.
The sentence means the Grammy-winning singer will not serve prison time immediately, although the suspended term may be activated if he breaches the conditions.
The incident occurred at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London, in the early hours of February 19, 2023.
According to evidence presented in court, CCTV footage showed Brown striking Diaw with a glass tequila bottle, hitting him twice on the head. The victim sustained head and knee injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the use of a glass bottle against the victim’s head as dangerous, warning that the attack could have resulted in more serious injuries.
The judge also stressed that Brown’s fame and commercial success did not entitle him to preferential treatment under the law.
Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who was also involved in the incident, received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
The court ordered both men to pay £1,500 each in prosecution costs.
Brown had faced more serious charges in connection with the incident, but prosecutors dropped them following his guilty plea to affray.
The case attracted widespread attention because of the singer’s international fame and the circumstances surrounding the nightclub assault.
The sentencing concludes a significant stage in the legal proceedings over the 2023 incident, although Brown’s suspended sentence leaves him subject to the court’s conditions during the 12-month period.
