The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two suspected cases of Ebola disease in Nigeria’s North-East region.
The NCDC disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday, saying both individuals had been isolated while contact identification and listing were ongoing.
The agency also said laboratory testing was underway to determine whether the suspected cases were positive for the virus.
“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” the NCDC said.
It urged members of the public to maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow guidance from public health authorities.
The agency said further updates would be provided as verified information became available.
The latest development comes days after the NCDC identified an e-hailing driver as another contact linked to Nigeria’s recent confirmed Ebola case, bringing the number of primary contacts under surveillance to 54.
The NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, had told Channels Television on October 26 that efforts were still ongoing to identify secondary contacts linked to the index case.
“So we are not out of the woods yet until we are sure that we have all the contacts, and they have been followed up. So we are still not out of the woods; because the index case is out doesn’t mean that we don’t have that,” Idris said.
The Federal Government announced Nigeria’s first confirmed case of the Bundibugyo strain on October 20, 2026, after a woman with a recent travel history to Uganda returned to the country with symptoms on October 7.
The Ugandan authorities, however, denied reports of an Ebola outbreak in the country.
The index patient was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland along with her husband for further medical care.
