The Sokoto State Government has shut down an office of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the state over questions surrounding the legal ownership of the property.
The state Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Dantsoho, announced the closure on Monday, saying the action was also aimed at preventing a recurrence of a recent confrontation involving party supporters and suspected troublemakers.
Dantsoho said government investigations into the ownership of the property showed that the building was registered in the name of the defunct Savannah Bank.
According to him, the records examined by the government contained no evidence of any subsequent transfer of ownership of the property.
The commissioner said the state government had contacted the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, which is responsible for the assets of the defunct bank, to establish the current legitimate owner of the building.
He, however, said the NDIC had yet to respond to the government’s inquiry.
Dantsoho explained that the government would maintain the closure of the ADC office until it received clarification from the NDIC and determined the rightful owner of the property.
He urged individuals or organisations claiming ownership of the building to submit relevant documents for official verification.
The commissioner added that the property would be handed over to its legitimate owner once the ownership dispute was resolved.
